Labor

  • Michigan has been a Right to Work state since 2013. This means that the collective bargaining rights of trade and labor unions in the state have been stripped and watered down by this legislation.

    • Right to Work allows everyone to benefit from the collective bargaining done by Unions, however, those who choose not to join the union officially and do not pay dues, still receive these benefits. This means that much of the Unions’ resources are spread thin, and reduces their ability to collectively bargain.

  • In the United States today, even those with Union negotiated contracts can have provisions that prohibit worker strikes, except in specific circumstances to oppose “conditions abnormally dangerous to health.” Solomon believes that workers should be able to strike no matter what, even in instances that are ~normally~ dangerous to health.

  • Oftentimes employers will intentionally misclassify workers so that they can avoid paying Social Security and Unemployment Insurance taxes, as well as income and Medicare taxes. They can also avoid paying their employees overtime and deny them health insurance.

What will Solomon do to protect labor organizations? He will:

  • Support the workers’ right to strike, and support prohibiting no-strike contracts.

  • Repeal entire Taft-Hartley Act.
    • End corporate anti-union propaganda, enable workers’ right of free speech and assembly.

    • In February 2020, dozens of graduate workers at UC Santa Cruz were fired for participating in a wildcat strike. Firing the workers was completely legal, and the striking workers had no legal protection. Due to the Taft-Hartley Act, workers have no protection in wildcat strikes, general strikes, and union-driven boycotts.

    • Expand social security to reduce the need for pension plans that are half-managed by employers.

    • Repealing the Taft-Hartley Act will remove some of the largest roadblocks facing unions and unionizing workers.

  • Support the Raise the Wage Act, effectively raising the Minimum Wage to a living wage of $15 an hour by 2024.

  • Supporting Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act.

    • Establishes a nationwide minimum standard for unions to be able to negotiate and collectively bargain for public sector workers.

    • This includes a requirement that public employers must recognize employees’ labor unions that are freely chosen by a majority of the employees voting, and to bargain with the labor organization over wages, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

    • In states that fail to meet these standards, the bill gives the federal government the authority to intervene on behalf of public employees and ensure their rights to form a union and negotiate are protected.

  • Prevent employers from falsely classifying workers as independent contractors to deny them benefits.

  • Support imposing severe penalties on employers who make it difficult to form unions.

  • Always champion the rights of working class people, and this means:

    • Help end hiring and workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

    • Help ending hiring and workplace discrimination against mothers and pregnant people.

      • This means he supports paid parental leave regardless to sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity, or whether the children are adopted or biological.

    • Support H.R. 3315, the Universal Child Care and Early Learning Act in order to support working families and invest in our children, and in turn, invest in our future.
